SHANGHAI

Shanghai is one of the world’s great cities and a major Northeast Asian economic and cultural center. Built around the estuary of the famed Yangtze River, it was a major trading port even before being opened to trade with Western nations in the mid 19th Century. This legacy can still be seen in the leafy streets of what was previously called the FrenchConcession, as well as the grand early 20th Century neoclassical and Art Deco architecture along the famous Bund. Across the river in Pudong, the meteoric rise of 21st Century Shanghai is on display in the glass and steel skyscrapers that crowd around the waterfront. If you stand in the right place, China’s past and future can be captured together in a single photograph.

Shanghai and its surroundings have plenty of great sightseeing opportunities.
We will put on a range of excursions to suitdifferent tastes and preferences.

TRANSPORT AND ACCOMMODATION

As befits one of the world’s largest cities, there are plenty of accommodation options that we are currently investigating. We will provide all tournament participants with high-quality hotel accommodation and coach transfers to our debate venues, including the host school. For transport around the city, the Shanghai metro is cheap, safe and efficient; taxis are cheap and plentiful and can be booked via an English-language app.

TRAVEL AND VISAS

Shanghai Pudong (PVG) is one of the world’s top ten busiest airports by passenger throughput each year. There are numerous direct flights to major cities throughout the world.

Most visitors to WIDPSC will be able to visit Shanghai on a tourist visa, which is usually fairly easy to obtain. We have extensive experience of the visa process and will provide support as required.
